View Full Version : How do you make yourself exercise daily

YES !!! that's my question. Some days you may not *feel* like getting the shorts, get the sneakers, get the DVD, go to the spot and do your exercise.

What motivates you? I can use some help.

I do exerise, but I tell you, if I give it too much thought, it could get put behind.

So far, I have put my exercise equipment in a room and I say, you can't go down stairs until you exercise. I have to be stern with myself.

So, what do you do to get in gear?

I have to do mine first thing in the morning. I also have to get up every single day and not miss a single one, or I miss the whole rest of the week! All or nothing for me, unfortunately. I also tell myself when I wake up, "I'm tired of not feeling good about how my body looks." Not the most positive thing to say to oneself, but it works for me right now. :)

I look at my exercise as MY time - I do it for myself. Yes, I want to lose weight and look better, but more importantly, I need the stress relief and the endorphins that I get from exercise. With 2 young kids, I find I'm a better mom and all-around nicer person if I get in my morning workout. I've changed my mindset from seeing exercise as a chore to seeing it as a way to take a little time for myself and recharge my battery.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It is truly MY time, and ditto the stress relief, endorphins, energy for the kids, etc. The bottom line is, if I don't exercise, I feel horrible..... and that affects every aspect of my life (outlook, attitude, personal interactions, tolerance for noisy children, you name it), and THAT is what gets me going.

I am afraid to miss one as well, because sooner or later, (at least once or twice a week), family matters do disrupt my precious time and then those have to be my rest days.

I get up at 3-3:30 am and excercise. There are no interuptions and no excuses at that time in the morning! I sleep in my workout clothes, so all I have to do is get up and put my shoes on. There is no thinking about it! As you can tell I'm a morning person. I'm sure this wouldn't work for everyone. Even for me it was tough at first, but like anything the habit forms. It takes 21 days to form a habit! It's easy after that. I look forward to getting up to do the FitPrimes and KickButts....I'm not as enthused when a Cathe workout is on deck! That's what makes the BBH workouts so good!

What's a BBH workout?

I did get up today and did my Lower body sculpt. I was pretty excited until I got winded.LOL. My plan is to do them in the mornings so I can get them done on an empty stomach. Not sure there is much to this but I atleast want to give it a shot to see if I burn more fat. Heck.. how do you know if it's the morning routine of exercise or that it's the empty stomach?

BBH-the last initials of the orginal firm founders and the team that put together this series. Anna, Cynthia and Mark.
I don't work out everyday but shoot for 5-6 days a week. Once you decide on a routine, things should fall into place.

I agree....make it a habit. Do it on faith for a while....at first it may seem a chore, but before you know it, it's part of your day and you just don't feel right without it......well, that's how it is for me. I also try not to think of it just as something I do for looks.....it's about health too.....I know bodies need movement and the FitPrimes and KickButts have such wonderful moves I FEEL better afterwards. I think Carol said.....give it 10 minutes....that's a trick I do too....don't say you HAVE to do an hour workout.....just make yourself get started and THEN re-evaluate....more than likely you will continue on.

I don't do well working out if I haven't had something to eat......I usually have something light about 45 minutes to an hour before I workout.....a banana or peanut butter on whole wheat....something or else I haven't any energy. I don't know about burning more fat or not......I just try to eat right all day and get that exercise in.....it works for me.

I repeat to myself, "I don't have to want to, I just have to do it." If you learn to think like that, you'll be surprised at how it can affect your workouts - and other responsible things we need to do in life.

Vanessa- Can't believe there's someone else who sleeps in their workout clothes! Makes rolling out of bed (but not until 6:00 a.m.) and going right for my weights doable for me.

I workout right after work. I look forward to it. I guess it is my therapy. Sometimes weekends are a little hard, so I plan ahead for a certain time and then follow through.

I made working out a habit a looooong time ago. I told myself I HAD to do it. I also told myself, "Don't think about...just do it." If I felt bad, I gave myself permission to quit after 5 minutes. I rarely had to quit. I don't feel well if I miss too many workouts.

I absolutely love and enjoy working out; finding enjoyable workouts is important. These WHFN workouts are so fun and motivating. First I wanted to do all 12; now I want to LEARN them so I can really get into it. I stay excited and motivated. If I tried to do an exercise program that I didn't enjoy there's NO WAY I could keep it up.

Me too, exactly!

I completely agree!

I know this will happen to me also. I just had to find the right set of workouts for me. Had lots of other circumstances that got in the way of my exercise when younger. I feel and know now that I have more control over what I do I will get this done and achieve the results I want. so, I'm a late blumer but I'll still be pretty:)

Research shows, and I am quoting The Firm of course, that committing to 21 workouts can make it a habit. Try that. Then commit to 100 workouts. I workout in the morning. It is my time. It is my therapy. There are times I don't want to exercise because I didn't get a good night's sleep so I choose from the numerous old and new firm and whfn workouts to suit my mood and level of energy. I do know if I skip working out I will beat myself up for the rest of the day for wimping out.

I believe I've made the 21 workout but they were not 21 in a row. I have been exercising regularly, that's weekly and at least 4 days per week at home since March.

My punching bag issue is that I eat in the morning, then I have to wait for the food to digest. The problem is in that waiting period a lot of procrastication can go on. I fight it. I get it done.

Yes, I could postpone eating but there is too much sleep time inbetween and no fuel for the engine to run on.. so I therefore require something in my stomach before my exercise. I also will not have the energy for the full time either if there is no fuel.

Like this morning, I ate, now waiting for the ole digestion but.. i have to go to the stoere and there again the exercise gets put back, then it's time to eat again. LOL. I do it though. Having this KB set is doing it for me and I'm very glad. Glad people on other fourm talked very good about this program. OTW: I would have never even considered it or have known.

Off to an interview on a full stomach. When I come back. I will exercise. I promise, MY SELF!!!!

I am really trying not to do that. I usually have a large glass of Orange Tang first thing in the morning then I have to wait to workout. Then I decide to have some coffee then I have to wait to workout. Then I get hungry and need to eat breakfast, wait again. By then I would not workout at all. I have been working on just having enough so I'm not thirsty and eating half of an energy bar/protein bar then waiting just a few minutes, then working out and having coffee or breakfast after my workout. That is going well so far. I am great at procrastinating. I just ordered a book from Amazon on changing that. Hopefully it will do me some good. Hopefully I won't put off reading it. LOL

Lisa,

You won't be putting off reading it, you'll just be reading something else. lol. I bought a book on yoga, pilates, meditation, etc, and just received in the mail a magazine I want to read, and have a book on salary negotiating and then there is the Motivational daily reading.. just too much on my reading list. I need to find a way to read what is important so I won't feel defeated.

This is a great & motivating thread to read! I think I'll be saving this thread as a favorite to go back and re-read from time to time when I feel sluggish and need an extra kick in the rear to get moving.

Yes, working out in the morning gets me energized and ready to take on the day. I'm on my feet for my job and I actually feel better working out before I leave for work.

I workout Mon. - Sat., Sun. being my rest day. I allow myself any extra cup of coffee while leisurely (sp?) reading the paper before church.

I ALWAYS eat before a workout, no fuel = no energy. I was just reading an article in SELF magazine about that. SELF June 2005 "getting active without fueling up can lead to a higher heart rate and perceived exertion; you fade out faster, so your routine is less effective".

I am motivated mostly by the fact that I love to exercise and that I feel like I'm accomplishing something for myself every time I do it. I'm prolonging my life, boosting my health, reducing my stress levels, and maintaining my mental health. I can't think of any reasons NOT to exercise! :)

What do you eat before you workout in the morning? I am up at 5 am to workout and can't imagine what to eat that would not upset my stomach during cardio routines and crunches. I will try to snag a copy of that issue of Self magazine to read the article you mentioned.

This is great seeing other people getting up in the wee hours! http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I found that if I exercised after work, I could find a bajillion reasons NOT to do it, however, if I got up at 4:30 in the morning, what else are you going to do?? It was SO hard getting up that early, then it was a little easier and now I find myself waking up and looking forward to it.. Now that I actually see results, it's a little extra reinforcement to keep exercising daily! Plus it helps me deal with the stresses of the job a little easier...http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I've never had a problem with doing the workouts because I've always enjoyed them so much. The only time I didn't was when I was too tired. And even then, I would try to forget it and just do it anyway. And I don't do mine in the morning. I come home from work and usually my stomach is empty because it's usually around 4 or 5, and I work out, fix dinner (let it cook while I'm in the shower) and then when I get out, dinner is ready. My motivation is how much I love these workouts. The beauty, the grace, the style- it's just lovely. And then there's the sweat. Lots of sweat. It's very cleansing. I just don't feel right if I don't work out.
