I just finished doing LEAN, my second of the new set.
I ADORE THIS WORKOUT!
Unlike PUMP, which was very slow and deliberate moves, LEAN is fast with a true old-style FIRM aerobic weight training feel to it. The "cardio" comes from this AWT.....lots of fun but nonfancy footwork on the floor, tall box climbs and weights to get your heartrate up. The moves, though, are really unique in that they all incorporate a stretching element to them. You actually feel taller doing them! At one point Kelli talks about how a certain movement feels like ballet, and I think much of the workout has that same ballet-like and graceful feel to it. Everything sort of flows one thing into the next.
Like PUMP, it starts out with core/abdominal work. There is a lower body emphasis throughout again, but I actually think that some of the bicep and tricep work in LEAN is HARDER than in PUMP. You do these pushups with one hand on the tall step that are killer and then go into some tricep work that is really tough. I had to lower down to 3 pounds halfway through.
Unlike in some of the older Firms, the stretching is not shortchanged. There's a really nice standing and seated stretch at the end that completes the overall "Feeling Good" feeling of this workout.
As in PUMP, the production is gorgeous....bright, vivid colors and crisp images. The music is perfect and unique.
The only thing I didn't like: wish it was about 10-15 minutes longer. After 37 minutes, you go into the stretch/cooldown. I would have loved a bit more.
I would rank this as upper intermediate/lower advanced. It has the same fun factor (to me at least!) of Maximum Cardio Burn from the Firm's Body Sculpting System 2. The whole workout just flies by and you are having a great time, but sweating and working hard. You finish this workout feeling really energized, graceful, tall and lean.

Everything the above reviewer said.
I did this one first, because I was most curious about the instructor. This one is a lot of fun, and I found myself smiling a lot. It also took me off guard because those leg presses were hard. The music and set are awesome. My monitor said my average HR was 118, with 27 zone minutes. I was sweating an awful lot by the end!!

I only had time to view this one, but I'm thrilled with what I see. I think it will be a strong intermediate workout, which is what I was hoping for with the 6 Fitprimes. I just might spend all evening previewing and deciding which one to do tomorrow. ;)

I can't wait to do another one tomorrow :)

Just finished this one and it's great! Can anyone tell me which Firm classic the tune is from when we're using the tallbox and v steps? I recognize it but can't place it.

Love, love, love this workout! I felt so energized when I was finished. What a gorgeous set. The colors are perfect, the music is better than I anticipated and Kelly and crew do a fantastic job of making me want to jump right in and join them. I think the combo of strength training, cardio, pilates and yoga is genius. Thanks BBH you have DONE IT AGAIN! Hill

I just finished Lean and really can't add much more than what everyone else has said. Though I will put a vote in for Kelli to lead more workouts for WHFN. She is a true asset and inspiration. :)

Hi!
I think that tune is from Fat Blaster and Allie is leading at that point. It is also in another one, I think maybe Super Cardio.--the part with Dale maybe? I love that tune!:)
I LOVE LEAN!! I though it was great and skeptical old me believes this will be a favorite! This is the first I have done from the set, so expect me to have them all be my favorites before it is over. Anna, Mark and Cynthia, these are fantastic and well worth the wait! I know I will love each and every one!

I am planning on doing this one today after watching it last night. There were two things that struck me about it-the cardio really looks fun without being high impact. I was never a fan of the cardio in the first FP's or the Firms but I think the cardio in the new workouts will hold my attention. The second thing-Kelly''s upper body-WOW. She really looks awesome and is a great instructor.

I did Lean today and have mixed feelings about it. Kelli is a wonderful instructor and the set and production are gorgeous. But it didn't feel like a hard enough workout to me. I had the same experience with Time Crunch. When I do the Time Crunch with Susan Harris, I sweat like crazy! But the Tamela Hastie version seems so much lighter, even though the workouts are so similar. These workouts feel so much easier to me, but it could be because they are relatively new so I'm learning a little bit along the way, too. I'll try them again a few more times before making my final conclusion!!
Thanks,
Liz

Did it. Really loved it. Who would have thought that low impact could make one sweat so much? Kelly is just superb. Her form and cueing lack nothing.
The final stretch was probably the most effective and thorough final stretch I have ever done in a video. The towel stretch while sitting on the tall step was like heaven.
Now, only drawback is that it took me a while to hit my target HR. Once my HR was elevated, I was able to modifyto keep it up. Next time, I plan to use light weights and a tiny bit of impact on the opening cardio tune.

Just a note-when I did this workout today, I was really able to heavy up on the weighted portions because I knew I wouldn't be doing a ton of reps. Instead of using 3's I used 5's-instead of using 10's, I used 15's. If it seems easy, you might want to try this next time.

I did Lean this morning and I loved it! That's 2 for 2 (Pump and Lean)! I just hope Anna has 12 more workouts brewing on the burner right now! These are awesome workouts. I was really expecting the workouts to be a breeze, but they are not! They are, to me, about the same intensity as the old Firms. As Kathy said, the reps are fewer, so "heavying" up is a given. I love these workouts!

I agree with Liz. I think it's too early to be rating these workouts until after I've done them a few times so I know exactly what intesity works for me. Right now, I have to say I didn't get the workout that I would have liked. The setting is great and the trainers are too, but that doesn't make the workout, it only motivates.

I'm so glad to read of this observation. I have found that it takes more to get *into* my training zone than to *stay* in it. For that reason, I am hoping that in future workouts we will have an opening tune like the tall box climb one in Fast Cheetah. I get many more minutes of cardio if I can just initially hit that zone.

Hi Everyone!
This is my first post here. I am so excited about these workouts that I wanted to post and share my enthusiasm.
I ordered the FitPrime 6 pk and received it Friday. I decided to go with LEAN as my first workout to try from the series because I wanted more cardio today.
I truly loved this workout! I have two left feet but had no problem following the choreo or Kelli's lead at all. I did not have problems keeping my heart rate up either and am sure I can up the intensity as soon as I am more familar with the workout....not that I feel I need to.
My HR stayed between 114 and 159. 159 is actually high for me but am sure that was during the tall box climbs. That gets mine up in other workouts too. http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/redface.gif I burned 197 cals and stopped at 36 min so I could add an arm workout. I am 43, weigh around 120 and have a resting HR around 55 - 60.
Have a very Happy Easter to all of you that celebrate! http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/smile.gif

I just got done doing this workout for the first time. So, far......I think this is my favorite!!! I've done UBB, LBB and FP. When she got to the towel stretch, I was amazed that it was already over!!!
My stats were good for this one also. My HR stayed in zone 33 of the 45 mins. and I burned 344 calories!!! The one segment with the sideways lunges and the other segment w/ the leg presses put me way above my HRZ.
I can't add anything that everyone else hasn't already been covered except this is my favorite!!!!

Wow Stephanie, I was amazed at your numbers. I loved this workout, but just couldn't stay in my zone. Here's my stats:
FitPrime "Lean"
43 minute workout
108 average hr
16 minutes in zone
162 calories burned
What really amazed me is that I know you and I do a lot of the same Cathe workouts, so I would think we are on a similar level of fitness. I'm going to have to try this one again soon and see what happens!

Jenn -- Thanks so much for the welcome! :) My reviews are never very detailed but am always happy to post my thoughts. Besides, you never know when you might enable someone! ;)
Stephanie -- I am so impressed that you burned so many cals! I burned 197 up until the cooldown/stretch so might have made to 230 or so if I had continued. (Next time I will do it all the way thru.)

Please remember, both of you.......that I'm coming off of almost a 2 week bout with the flu.......I'm still finding it tough to do normal things......and that may be part of the numbers.
Also.....I'm at 159 lbs.......so, that makes a huge difference.....both of you are much smaller so your #'s won't be as high. Just so you know, though......I'm aiming at getting to your weights.......so look out......here I come! :p
psssssttttttttt.......I think these and Cathe, and some serious step aerobics will get me there! ;)

Stephanie, I'm sorry to hear that you were sick. Glad you are on the mend! I'm only about six pounds lighter than you (and shorter to boot!) so I can't use that excuse! I'm hoping to get to 145 lbs. in the next few months.
P.S. I'm that crazy peep jerena from the yaya's who bugged you about Low Max. I'm loving this workout as much as you are!;)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh............the truth comes out!!!!.......lmao I'm just happy to know an adult close to my size at 5'1"....lol
And you never bugged me, ever!!! I'm just glad you are enjoying it. I worry sometimes that what I like and feel are impressive someone else will hate and bought it because of me......lol
I'd love to take the journey to 145 with you. I haven't been in the 150's in over 15 years.....so I'm quite excited. We can pm here or at yayas.......I think having someone to make that journey always helps! ;)

Stephanie, you are 5'1? I thought you were 5'10! Geez, that's quite a difference, huh? LOL!!! Leave it to me to screw numbers up. I barely passed General Math!:D I'm 5'7, so I guess I DO have a little bit of height over you!
I would love to take the journey with you. I have been getting advice from a trainer who really thinks the key for my body type is long, continuous cardio (which Low Max and Step Blast are ideal for). If you want, you can check out my training diary on this site. Long cardio sessions are tough, because I love aerobic weight training. Keep in touch, please!

Hey, guys, all kinds of factors go into that number our heart rate monitors tell us (they are only just an estimate anyway): weight, height, bmi (depending on your model of hr monitor), level of fitness (dep. on hr monitor), AGE (huge factor in the aerobic ranges and maximum heart rate calculations), the alignment of the moon (just kidding! ;) ). I LOVE my heart rate monitor!

I'm wondering why Anna Benson, the doyenne of sweat-inducing FIRM workouts, would design a series of workouts that seem to be, on the whole, pretty light-weight. I am going to tackle Lean this evening and if it's like LBB I may send them all back. When I started doing FIRM workouts I could barely get through the warm-up - that was 2 1/2 years ago. I also do Karen Voight and Cathe's easier workouts. Do you all think 43 minutes is enough? When I was taking aerobics way back in the 80's all classes were at least an hour. Now researchers are saying that you need at least that to get an effective workout. So why are they all coming out with these short workouts? So far I'm not happy  but I'm going to keep giving it a shot for a few more DVDs and if I change my mind:) I'll certainly post.

I follow scientific/medical research fairly closely, and I haven't heard of any study that has provided a definitive answer to how much exercise is enough, so if you have a link to a peer-reviewed study, I'd love to see it.
JMHO, but I think the quality of my exercise is often more important than the quantity. I also haven't found any of the FP/KB workouts I've done so far (three of each) to be what I'd call lightweight. Different from many other instructors' workouts, yes, but definitely not lightweight.

March 29th, 2005, 07:54 AM
As a researcher, I know enough about research that you can tweak a study to get the results you are looking for, too. For example, you want to look at whether working out for 10 minutes a day results in people losing weight. Depending on the participants you chose (say, people who've never worked out at all), your sample size (larger sample sizes have huge "power" in producing predicted results), and other variables, you can (many times) predict the outcome of your study before you even start to collect data.
Got on my soapbox a little there - sorry! ;)
Bernie, the trick is finding what works for you. I've found that what works for me is consistency in my workouts and always keeping my body guessing. I do workouts of varying lengths to do just that. I also keep a variety of workouts in my repertoire to choose from. I've found that I do not have to do killer workouts 5 or 6 or even 7 days a week (I'm 28 BTW). Part of keeping my body guessing is a nice blend of the tougher stuff with more moderate activity. But that may not work for others. It's just what works for me. No study, unless they used me as a single-subject design, is going to be able to tell me what works best for me. :D

Before I ordered these workouts I was wondering if they would be tough enough. After I did my first w/o, which was Lean, I thought it was too easy. Since then, my 'sore' hip muscles that I've dealt with for years, have turned into very 'painful' muscles. If I would have been doing some of these very good, but less jarring workouts for all these years, maybe I wouldn't be in the situation I'm in today. There are ways to get results without the very intense workouts we are use to doing. I think Anna is trying to prove that. I am greatful for these workouts because I CAN change the intensity if I see fit.

Just adding my 2 cents... I used to take Kelsie's live kickboxing class twice a week -- it was so tough. But by the time we got started and then cooled down..went to get mats and laid down to do the floorwork... her class lasted approx. 45 to 50 minutes.
It was tough and effective. Everywhere I look there are conflicting reports regarding exercise. There are professionals that say 20 minutes a day is enough..there are others who encourage rest days and others who say do "something" everyday. Jenn is right. You have to find what works for you.

The studies I referred to have been in all the papers because they surprised so many people. Can't tell you who did them, but I saw them in the Washington Post Health Section a couple of weeks ago. Hey, I'm skeptical, too. But at 53+ I think I am battling a case of hormones that is making fat cling to me like toilet paper to a heel.:D Nonetheless, when I was doing that hour class I was 100 lbs. and size 2 versus the 135 and size 10 I am now (I would like to take this moment to tip my hat to the other vertically challenged ladies on this board - I'm 5' tall).
Martha E
March 29th, 2005, 12:48 PM
I did see the article in the Post, but I couldn't find the study results (I don't think the article mentioned whether the results had been published or presented at a meeting), so I don't know enough about the controls, confounding variables, etc. to assess the results. What I do know, though, is that more than how much a person exercises factors into the outcome. Case in point: I'm 57, and I don't spend nearly as much time working out as I used to, and my weight hasn't varied in years. In fact, I actually weigh a few pounds less than I did in my 20s and 30s. Genetics? To some extent. Long-term consistency? Also to some extent. And who knows what else?
But back to Lean--I just finished this workout, and I loved it. I think its intensity is very deceptive, because most of the moves are slower than one usually associates with intense workouts. But the whole workout is so well paced--as seems to be the case with all the KBs and FBs, there's no wasted time, and there's no wasted movement. Keli's cuing and reminders were superb--how DID she see me every time I stopped thinking about posture and alignment?
The other thing I'm noticing every time I do one of these workouts for the first time is how much they build on each other. No single workout is really meant to fatigue the muscles--otherwise it would be difficult to crosstrain with them and do them in rotations without overtraining. I love this way of working out and training my body to be stronger and more functionally fit. I think of it as fitness for life.

OK, I have to say that I loved Lean. I love Keli Roberts. It just wasn't long enough but I did break a decent sweat with this workout. I liked the pace, the intensity, the music, it was all very well done. I felt like I worked my muscles. Maybe they should put this one on the rotation first so folks trying out the FitPrime workouts can get a taste of what it's like. Granted, it wasn't a burner like some of the earlier FIRMs or even some of the later FIRMs, but it's a keeper.:D See? I can say nice things, too.:p

I just finished this one tonight, and so far of the ones I've tried (MB, LBB, L) it is hands down my favorite!! First off, let me say that I do not like true cardio workouts, so much so that my hubby recently bought me an elliptical trainer so that I could get some cardio in. Normally I feel like cardio is too fast-paced and uses such complicated footwork that it really doesn't equal fun for me.
But this workout is so incredibly FUN, from the warmup (love the big movements with the hands) all the way to the towel stretch. I've been feeling like I need to pop my back this week and the stretch took care of that feeling WITHOUT popping my back! I could use just an entirely towel-stretch video. :p
The triceps kickbacks on the tall step were tough, as were the leg press/dips and the last cardio segment. I had to take a break halfway through the last cardio segment (dang, I thought I was in better shape than that...). The cardio was simple choreography-wise but still very fun. I liked the weights and squats segments as well... not too much for a cardio workout but enough to make me feel "worked out".
Keli is FABULOUS in this workout... her cueing is perfect and her demeanor is very warm and soothing yet down-to-business. Tamela was demonstrating the same moves as Keli but with a flowier, dancier feel, whereas Keli was more athletic. I really like seeing both variations in the workout. The music was GREAT in this workout, very energetic and kind of edgy. I give Lean an A+!

Yes, Jen, you could say that:) . Stacy, I'm glad you gave this one such good marks. Personally Tamela or whatever her name is really irritated me. I can't stand that "I'm such a girly girl" workout style, but that's just me. I thought Keli did a great job and I just love that accent. Like you I also like to have a lot of cardio so what I've decided to do is add some time on the Nordic Track after the workout. Another thing I liked, usually after a long hard cardio workout I'm starving. This didn't make me so hungry. It may have actually suppressed my appetite a bit.

lol, I like to think I look more like Keli when I work out... Tamela's style IS too girly-girl for me, but I think it's good to show that you can personalize it for whatever your "style" is. :)
I do love my elliptical... eventually once I determine my favorite DVDs I'll probably set up a rotation that includes both these DVDs AND elliptical training so that I don't waste all the $$$ we spent on it. Or I might just start warming up on it for about 15 minutes before each workout.

Instructor:
Keli Roberts
Crosstrains with:
FitPrime Pump with Heidi Tanner
Breakdown/Chapter points:
~ Cardio - Warm-up Claps - love the cymbal arms!
~ Pilates - Table Donkey Kicks (there are also crunches for the abs, some using the block behind the head, climbing the rope, etc.) - I really felt this, especially after my DOMS in my hams from Pump yesterday!
~ Cardio - Skate - fun, athletic moves - calf pumps, skating, abductions. Very simple choreography with large arm movements moving through space.
~ Cardio - Mambo Slide - starts with Tai Chi breathing. Then moves into side squats with starburst arms, mambos side-to-side with floating arms, mambos forward.
~ Weights - Dip and Press - Dips and shoulder presses.
~ Cardio - Choo Choo - Mambos and v-steps around the tall box, calf work leaning on the box. This song is from and old Firm...
~ Weights - Push-ups - chest push-ups, tricep push-ups, and tricep kickbacks with a variation.
~ Cardio - Side Step and Press - I LOVED this. Side lunges with variations, mixed with lateral raises and overhead press for shoulders.
~ Cardio - Grapevine - Using the stick (I used a weighted bar, made this TOUGH!). Starts out with calf pumps and squats. Then, moves into grapevine, hamstring curls, all using the stick.
~ Weights - Step Up and Dip - Slow Leg Press and Dip combination. Really elevated my heartrate quickly. Hammer bicep curls. Side squats with hammer curls.
~ Cardio - Plie' Pop - Fun little move adding a jump to a moving plie'. Rocking horses, mambo cha chas, and small hops.
~ Weights - Row & Squat - Single arm lat row. Then, there was this really cool squat move where you transfer your weight through each leg in one fluid movement - really felt this! Traditional squats also.
~ Yoga - Ham & Back - using the towel.
~ Yoga - Balance Stretch - standing with the stick.
Overall Impressions: This went super fast! I really enjoyed it. Keli did a great job. I LOVED watching Tamela in the background; she looked like she was having so much fun. I'm thrilled with this workout because not only can I do it and still feel like I got a great workout in (I'm in my 20s and have worked out with the Firm for over 10 years), but I think my 63 year old Mom could do this one with me! Now, that's a workout that really bridges a gap. :D I'm finding that I feel this way about all the FitPrimes....

I just finished Lean and really enjoyed it. Next time I think I'll add ankle weights for the tablework and instead of a yoga block, use a weight for the oblique twists.
I added a lot of big arm movements and some impact to the cardio to make it more challenging but I was in the mood for cardio today. I made my movements quite big and used up all of my space. Next time I am going to use weights for the stick cardio to make it tougher - make it into four-limbed aerobics.
I didn't use weights for the tall box work and did a knee-up making it more cardio than sculpting.
The only problem I had with this workout is that I was still quite sore from Pump yesterday and I don't like using weights two days in a row. My chest, back and butt have some major DOMS and Keli did tall box work, push-ups and lat rows. I did the easiest push-up I could because it hurt, lol! :p
I don't think I'll use Lean to cross-train with Pump. Lean is meant to be fast and light but quite frankly, it hits every major body part with a lot of cardio thrown in and IMHO is a stand alone workout.
Again, this is true AWT and I absolutely loved it. It is actually another Time Crunch! :D
When I previewed this workout I was so-so about Keli - I didn't think I would like her for some reason. Actually working out with her is a totally different experience than watching her! She was excellent - form pointers at just the right time and very encouraging. I very much enjoyed her and am looking forward to trying Upper Body Burn and Strong Bear.

I did Lean for the first time tonight. I LOVED IT!! Oh my, Miss Keli has a cute accent, doesn't she? She's such a good cuer, too.
This workout was a surprise. At first I was thinking it was too easy, then I found myself smiling, then I found myself sweating. :D It kinda sneaked up on me. Gosh, this one's FUN!
This is the 4th WHFN I've done. I'm blown away by the production quality, the music, the instructors, the cast, the set, the clothes...everything is gorgeous.
I have to say, I'm excited every day to do my workouts. I'm so glad I got the 12-pack...8 more to go!! :D

Jenn - Thank you thank you for posting the workout breakdown. *That's* what I need for each of these workouts! I think the first review with a breakdown should be posted at the top of the thread. I'm sure it took alot of time to do the breakdown and I want you to know how much I appreciate it! I'll be using it for years. . .:)
Hey, Lisa,
Thank you! I've always loved to do breakdowns. I used to live in Columbia, and I was typically the first to get the new FPs when they came out. I loved being able to help everyone waiting by posting a breakdown and review of the moves.
Do you see that I had already placed my breakdown in the first post of the threads on the workouts I've done so far? It's not exactly the same as my review, but it is the breakdown color coded. I'm doing each workout as I'm able to do them - all 12 in a row. ;)
Thanks again! I have been spending a lot of time on them.

This is the 8th WHFN workout for me and I love it! These are so easy to adjust for your fitness level and I am feeling these the next day! This one clocks in at 43 min (all of the others have been 1 min to 4 min longer than stated which is a fantastic surprise!). It is truly aerobic weight training with great upper body work. I can see where this would also be a good cross trainer for Crunch Time or Strong Bear!

I think that Lean is a bit deceiving. At first I didn't think it was as challenging as the previous FitPrimes or Firms...however....
because it's not as fast paced as some of the other workouts, I found that I could really work my muscles more deeply and use heavier weights. It was easier to concentrate on the muscle being worked ("put your mind into the muscle").
I feel that I got a more effective workout. And this morning, I'm feeling it.
Kelli is just "OK" for me. Maybe she'll grow on me.

Since I last posted I have done Lean for the second time. This time I put my HRM on. I pumped up the cardio parts as much as possible and used heavier weights this time, too. I burned only 69 calories, was in my zone less than 6 minutes with an av. HR of 108. I really like this workout, fun and all, but I'm not happy with the results. Right now, low key workouts is what I need, and I'm happy I have something to follow. That's great for now, but I probably won't be happy when I can really go for it. I've been sweating with the Firm since 1986 and loved every minute. *sigh* I really have mixed feelings about the W/O as you can tell. I expected more from Fit Prime. I want to sweat!
Martha E
March 31st, 2005, 06:35 AM
Hmmm, are you sure your HRM is working correctly? You'd burn more calories than that on a very leisurely stroll, and Lean definitely requires more exertion than a leisurely stroll does.

March 31st, 2005, 07:17 AM
I will check my settings, but the day before, I went for a 2mile-30 minute walk and burned around 150 calories. I don't know what my AHR was. I have done more of the (New) Fit Prime workouts and the calorie burn is just not there. But I will take a look at my settings. (Never know what can happen when you're not looking!)
Tarheels
March 31st, 2005, 07:56 AM
Cookie, definitely check those settings. I don't think your zone is entered correctly or either your HR monitor may not be reading your HR the entire workout. I would expect lower readings for the FP workouts, but never that low. I can burn 69 calories sitting on my sofa for 43 minutes. Don't ask me how I know that already. ;)
Martha E
March 31st, 2005, 08:01 AM
Jenn, I'm glad you said that (and I won't ask how you know ;) ). I was beginning to think I was an exceptionally good burner!

OK. I apologize. I got my log mixed up a bit. I still only burned 102 calories in 43 minutes, 8:29 in zone, with an AHR of 103. I checked my monitor and everything is fine. I've not had low readings until I started with the new W/Os. I'll do some jump rope to test since I know how many cals I normally burn. I really don't think it's my monitor though. Really, I don't feel like I'm working very hard.:(

I'm 5'4" and between 137-141 pounds. I guess I've never considered myself lean or petite (other than being on the shorter side). I think I'm in pretty good shape and don't want to lose what I've worked so hard for.

Well, this just goes to show you how variable our results can be. We're the same height, but I'm about 20 pounds lighter than you are (small frame). I consider myself to be upper intermediate/low advanced, yet I found Lean to be more vigorous than you did. And we wonder why scientific studies of exercise produce conflicting results....

Its really strange how we all react differently to workouts. I am 46 5'5" and 130lbs. I don't wear a heart rate monitor, but feel "in my zone" based on perceived exertion and sweat buckets. This one is one of my favs so far.

I liked Lean, its a nice medium workout. I do like the new set, although I guess I'll always like the orginal set best. I've also completed Push Pull, Floor Burn, and Steamin' Cardio. Floor Burn is a good compliment to more strenuous workouts. I really liked the Kelsie Steamin' Cardio, but the new one is fine. To me one of the hallmarks of the orginal Firms was no whooping, cheering, or studpid extraneous chatter. The instructor just told you what to do, how many to do, and just a very few words of encouragement. I don't care how great a workout is if there is irritating non-stop chatter. It's why I only ever bought one Charlene *****ett & I'll never buy Denise Austin.

Quote from Martha E:
The other thing I'm noticing every time I do one of these workouts for the first time is how much they build on each other. No single workout is really meant to fatigue the muscles--otherwise it would be difficult to crosstrain with them and do them in rotations without overtraining. I love this way of working out and training my body to be stronger and more functionally fit. I think of it as fitness for life. http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/cool.gif[/QUOTE]
Hi
I am an old time firmie (1991) and I have all the original Fitprimes. I presently do Cathe, yoga and running as my main fitness method. I just ordered the 12 pack but now I read your post and that is EXACTLY what I have been missing. I used to "firm" (pregoodtimes) 5 or 6x a week and got in incredible shape. It's exactly what you said, Martha E., crosstraining w/ the workouts w/o overtraining the muscles. Yay!! I can't wait to try these workouts. http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/smile.gif /karen

Sorry guys... not a real big fan of Lean. I loved Kelly's style, but honestly this workout seemed a little weird. I will keep it in my rotation because I trust Anna and like the way these workouts build on each other... but, I could not tell what this video was trying to be.
Then again I HATED Core First the first time I did it and then it became one of my faves... so who knows?????????

I could not tell what this video was trying to be.
I know what you mean - these workouts *aren't* the "same old thing" - because they are unique, it takes some time to figure them out. I often wish we could read Anna's notes about each workout so we would understand them and get the greatest benefit from them.
After I have tried each one twice I plan to sit down with my notes and try to figure out the big picture. :D

Love this workout too!! I like Keli as an instructor and her cueing is great. I think I stopped the dvd twice to catch on to the moves and this was my first time through. I see opportunities where I can "heavy up" if I am so inclined.
I have the Firm BSS3 and I keep telling myself to go back and do those workouts but I keep doing the FitPrime instead.

I loved the fact that there was no step in this video.
I liked Kelli, her accent is adorable, as is she.
I liked that it was low intensity, not alot of jumping and stuff.
But...
I didnt sweat buckets like with my other firms and I didnt feel worked out when I finished. My heart rate didn't get up until almost the end of the tape. I did push/pull afterwards and got a much better workout. Gotta love Heidi!
Tamela drove me crazy. I kept wondering if I'd slipped in a ***** by accident. I kept saying aloud "tone it down! give me a break!" I'm afraid to open crunch time now.

Ok, I did CrunchTime last night and I Looved Tamela. She was great and didn't irk me not 1 time! (well there was this weird snorting breathing segment thing she did at the end but that was more funny than annoying). I did Firm Super Cardio Sculpt afterwards because I needed more cardio, ok and I wanted to see Nancy's abs  . Lean is still my least favorite out of the starter pack.
I will incorporate the starter pack at least once a week simply because they have no step and have alot of stretching and core work.

I like Lean for being low impact and feel Keli really has a great presence on screen. I find something to value about all of them at this point. Knowing there will be more to come in the future, makes me realize that Lean will probably be one of those on light days, which for me is becoming more often than in the past. Also blending all 12 in a rotation will keep them all feel new.
Lean is in the middle of the pack for me in terms of likeability. I'm still drawn to Metaboost and Pump first.
In reference to Tamela in this one.....I was bit bothered that the camera was on her as much as it was on Keli. She was having TOO much fun IMO. :o A bit over the top for me, but many adore her "fun factor" .

I'm not great at reviewing but I liked this workout. I didn't sweat a lot but I could fee that I got a good workout, since I don't have a heart rate monitor I can't tell you if I was in the fat burning zone but I know for sure that my heart rate went up! :o
This is definitely low impact and I really enjoy Keli Roberts. I hope she is with WHFN for the long term.
There were some odd editing flubs, Tamela and Carol (welcome back to the cast Carol!) were doing some moves on one side while Keli was alternating moves and Tamela and Carol were on a different beat in one of the cardio moves. But all in all, wonderful queing, music, colours and set.
I don't start my first WHFN rotation (calendar) until week after next  so I'll keep trying workouts little by little on my 'choice of workout' days

Carol - thanks for the thorough review (waaaayyy back on page 1 http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/wink.gif).
I did Lean for this first time this AM, and the time flew by. I don't care for complex choreography, and this definitely fit the bill. Keli's delivery and cues were very good. Loved the stretching at the end of the work-out - reminded me of my original Firms as far as the length of time spent stretching. I can definitely see Mark's influence in the tasteful set. The music was very good. On several occasions, I found myself thinking, "now where have I heard that piece of music?"
For those who want to make Lean more challenging: make your low impact moves as big as possible (the grapevines, etc.) - or add in some impact on the cardio sections. And heavy up on the weights. I don't consider myself to be the quickest when it comes to finding ways to modify work-outs, but could see lots of possibilities here.
Thumbs up! http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hi everyone, I've enjoyed every one's reviews. I think it's great that every one has a different "take" on each workout.
I'm not very good at reviews but I thought I would post this as a beginner (starting over again!!) review. I loved the workout and I did the whole workout (I did only use 3lb dumbells and modified the leg press). I was sore the next day but not wiped out. I know I should have not done the complete workout but I couldn't resist, the time went by fast! Kelli is a great instructor and to me it had the feel of the old classic firms.
So if anyone out there is a beginner or starting over:) give this workout a try. I can't wait to try the others.

I did Lean for the second time this morning and found it MUCH harder then the first time I did it. I used heavier weights this time since I had been through it once already. I thought this was going to be one of my "easy" day workouts but after this morning I changed my mind! Lean is pretty much a weight workout - I don't know how they get the 21 minutes of cardio that it says on the box. According to my HR monitor I was only in my cardio zone for 8 minutes and I think I spent the rest of the time either way under my zone (during the table work/ab section) or way over my zone (leg press/dip/bicep/squat section). I still like this workout a lot, I would just consider it more of a weight workout. I'll see how sore I am tomorrow, but I don't think I could see doing Pump on the following day after Lean.
Also I LOVE Kelli Roberts. Her form pointers were very helpful to me. She looks great and is very motivating. It was also comforting to see her trying to catch her breath in one segment!

Keli is such a good instructor, you can do that. Do a workout with no preview.
I really like this workout. It's like the Firm Hare, without the silly ballroom dancing.:p
I'm sure next time I do the workout I'll get my heartrate up higher cause I'll really know what's coming next and will push it a little harder.

I did lean yesterday and really, really liked it. Not my fav but in the top 5!
I burned 320 cal., didn't really sweat to much, but I made an effort to make my movements BIG. These Fit Prime workouts are designed for women 35 and older, who may not be in peak condition. So this workout is perfect for me. I used to do a Firm workout everyday (pre GT) and was in my prime, but about 5 years ago I fell off the workout wagon and became soft and flabby. http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/frown.gif I have searched high and low, spent a lot of money, to find the perfect workouts and I have found them.http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/smile.gif

I am not so sure I like this one much. I did it once and I know what you all mean about Tamela. The camera is way too focused on her moves and I mean she really moves! Modified it by adding wrist weights, ankle weights in spots, and heavier dumbbells throughout and it was TOUGH, but good tough. And the time flew! I loved it too. especially the cardio bits.
what I love about these workouts is they are all so different from each other.
no repeating, really lots of variety, with no room for boredom.
what's so wonderful about them also, is they seem just to know the right amount of rep's before I just can't go anymore. I've noticed how each instructor not only cues wonderfully, but they each have their own-style about giving you proper form & technique & what the moves are doing for your body. They are a great bunch, & I love how they each make it their own "personal" video.

I just did Lean for the second time, also. I have to agree - camera focus on Tamela is over the top... I also agree with Jen - I am 57 and have done Firm workouts since the stone age, but now have knee and lower back problems - modification is my middle name. I've been lurking for a while --- finally got the DVDs and started the rotation last week. So far I've done Metaboost and Flex Posture, which I liked a lot, and yesterday I did Lean, which overall I liked except that I absolutely could not stand Tamela's mannerisms in this workout. I felt like everytime they showed her (which is a lot) she was making some highly exagerrated facial expression and/or wiggling her body around in a way that bore no relationship to actual exercise. I found it distracting. I liked Tamela fine in Flex Posture, and she didn't bother me much in previous videos (I think it was Cardio Burn, but maybe not), but I'm really annoyed about Lean. I like Keli a lot, and I think the choreography is good, but the constant focus on Tamela's drama-queen antics spoils the workout for me.

I've been reading these reviews and I am struck by how the same workout, or even the same instructor, can evoke such a wide range of emotions in peoplehttp://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/smile.gif .
Overall, I love Lean. I find Keli's instruction clear and her demeanor seems very down to earth. The workout itself always leaves me feeling energized and with some pleasant DOMS the next day.
And I for one am not turned off in the least by Tamela. I really like her. IMHO, she looks great, seems genuinely enthused about the workout, and certainly has good form. I guess I don't interpret her movements as "preening," but instead as just having a good time with the workout in her own way. I actually find that very motivating.

I think she is trying to project a feeling to us all. Some will like, some won;t.I sometimes wonder to those who find her expressions, and or body language a turn off is to think about how you would look like working out. What the heck is your face doing, how is your body language, what the heck do you think your projecting.I bet it would be a hoot to see what we all would look like working out. Everyone is different and I think its really okay to agree to disagree on some things in ANY video. Even Cathe has her critics from time to time!! An instructor's style may not be for everyone and having both positive and negative comments help others decide what videos are right for them. When you put yourself out there as an instructor, you have to be willing to take the good with the bad and go on. Overall, I think WHFN did an excellent job in choosing instructors for these videos, but I can also see why some workouts may be a turn off for some folks.

Just here to swallow my pride and say this video--which I really did not like-- has become one of my faves. I take kickboxing 2-3 x a week and do a fusion (yoga and pilates class) twice a week.
Many times I am just too sore for my beloved FitPrimes... Lean has slowly become a regular in my rotation. It works me, yet is so gentle. I knew this would happen as soon as I posted that I "didnt get it".
Of course I still love the old Weights First and the new Strong Bear for a kick butt weight workout and Push Pull for a interval and the Fast Cheetah/Steamin Cardio for aerobics...but Lean (as well as Pump and Metaboost) just seem gentler on those sore days.

I'm surprised I never commented on Leanhttp://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/biggrin.gif .
I finished Lean, today, after not doing it for over 6 months.
I had just finished working out with Petra Kolber's Sweat FActory (an oldie but goldie that I'm never trading awayhttp://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/wink.gif ) about a half hour earlier. I used hand weights (1 lbers) and the heavier dumbbells for most sections. I also added in some high impact and made movements larger.
These modifications make this workout a solid intermediate workout. It's a perfect AWT style.
I'm feeling pleasantly worked out. The music is great, Keli is a motivating instructor and I think Tamela's dramatic take is very cutehttp://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/tongue.gif .
These WHFN:Fitprimes are great workouts for days when you have a lot time to workout and can do 2 or more mild to moderate intensity workouts during the day.

This DVD has quickly become a favorite of mine. You hit all the major muscle groups in 43 min and also get a good cardio and stretch workout to boot.

I like Lean and it's length too, after doing 50 - 60 min workouts for the last 6 weeks, I'm finding that I need shorter workouts, that 30 to 45 min range. I've found that I really like SHAPE Bikine Body Camp transforming and redefining DVDs. I get a full body workout in 30 min and each DVD has 3 and 2 workouts, respectfully.
Oh dear, I sound like I work for SHAPE - LOL. I love my FitPrimes, I just don't have time to do a full FP rotation right now :)

I also have the SHAPE DVD's and like them. I also really like Keli Robert's new Timesaver series. I have the Upper Body and her Lower Body and Core workout should be out any day now on Collage *****. Each are only 30 minutes long.

Revisiting LEAN (by a loyal WHFN fan)
This workout consists of low-intensity intervals. To increase intensity, it is highly recommended that you add ankle weights to the first few tunes to increase intensity (the warm up and the table work in particular).
For a more steady-state aerobic workout, play chapters 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 then 2, 7, 13, and 14.
I have decided that a flaw in this workout is the tall box climbs that many have mentioned they enjoyed/found challenging. These are done pretty fast - even Keli gets totally out of breath doing them. I would compare it to giving a child a 4th grade test and throwing in a few college-level questions. I don't understand why a workout would be all at one level and then something thrown in so out of harmony with the overall workout.
If the purpose of a workout is to include high-intensity intervals, one would think they would be slipped in throughout the workout. If the purpose was a low-intensity interval workout, the tall box climbs would have been done more slowly, keeping the workout consistent in difficulty. JMHO.
