Has anyone read the article in August's PREVENTION MAGAZINE, "Build a Better Workout - 8 moves to keep, 8 to ditch"?

I've shared this info with some of our workout partners, but I still am not sure what to make of it.

PREVENTION SAYS TO DITCH: ab crunches; dumbbell flies; side knee crunch (like Carissa does at the end of Maximum Cardio) for obliques; upright rows(!!!); and heel raises - a la Heidi in Pump; side bends - says they cause your waist to grow BIGGER:eek: ( like Traci does in Maximum Body Shaping!).

This article, By Selene Yeager, states that these moves don't work and may also cause injury.

I'm confused!!! Any input would be welcome!!! Claire

One of the things that has frustrated me in my fitness journey is the conflicting information that is out there. It seems that everyone has an opinion. It's hard to weed out the useful and the non-useful.

I'm sitting here trying to think how you could hurt yourself doing an ab crunch. I guess if you pull on your neck you could hurt yourself. The thing is that you can hurt yourself doing anything if you have bad form. Darn, I strained my rotator cuff doing rows and overhead press because I was hunching my shoulders. Lesson learned.

Did Prevention describe the "oblique" move they recommended?

I agree there is a lot of information out there. But, when I started exercising back in the early 70's.... I was told girls don't use weights. http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif We would look like men. http://www.whfn.com/board/images/smilies/eek.gif

Thanks for posting that link Jann - why didn't I think of that:o

Blkane - as you can see in the article, it's not so much that these moves cause injury, it's states that these moves do NOTHING for fitness or sculpting; ie. " pec flies only help you give a better bear hug, not chest definition."

Also, all the moves described in the article are pictured. The oblique crunch is where you lay on your side and do sort of a side sit-up.

Looking foward to more input - anyone from Team WHFN out there? Claire

Interesting article. Certainly, some of the things they said are logical. However, I'm not convinced that pec flies are not good for chest muscle development. I'm not looking for cleavage just working the muscle.

I subscribe to Prevention Magazine and usually find something interesting in each issue. HOWEVER, I do take everything presented in it with the proverbial grain of salt because of the fact that every other page in that magazine is an advertisement for some kind of drug. It seems ironic that the name "Prevention" would feature so many ads for symptom suppressors rather than focusing 100%on wellness. I try to keep an open mind, but I don't think I'll be giving up my dumbbell flies anytime soon:p.
