Ladies:
Last month, I bought a box of the South Beach Meal Replacement Bars made my Kraft. It tasted pretty good but later that evening, I started to feel little aches in my knees and finger joints. I was disturbed because arthritis runs in my family and I thought it was a bit too soon to be having symptoms already and just hoped it was weather or stress related.
I continued to eat one every day and the aches got worse and worse but never did I connect it to food allergies, I just thought it was arthritis. I made an appointment with a rheumatologist and hoped it was just one of those ailments that comes and disappears.
I had difficulties doing lunges and I couldn't bend my knees all the way without feeling the "rubbing" of bones and my fingers were mildy achy. In the mornings my knees were very stiff and I have this little step leading up to my bedroom from teh living room. Just one step about 9" high. Coming down this step in the morning to get to the shower was hard and I found myself practically jumping down instead of bending my knee and stepping down.
One day, I brought one bar to work and ate it during a long meeting. When I left that meeting, my hands were hot, throbbing, and red. They were so swollen I looked like I had mitts on and trying to open a door was so painful, I wanted to cry. I could literally feel my finger joints rubbing against each other and I felt so sorry for my Mother and Grandmother who suffered with arthritis for years.
That is when it finally occurred to me that it was the South Beach Meal Replacement bars. I stopped and got the MSM/Glucosomine/Chrondroiton supplements and stopped eating it immediately. Well the pain went away and never came back. I went to see the rheumatologist and he said there was absolutely no sign of arthritis in my knee or joints. Hurray.
I can't tell you how scary that was and I can see how people can actually die from food allergies. I'm not sure what the ingredient was that triggered this reaction as I never get food allergies. The only ingredient that would be alien to my body would be Splenda since I never take sugar subsitutes of any kind.
I just wanted to share this with you in case you have similar experience with these low carb food products. If you've eaten these with great results, great. I'm not making any accusation that it is bad for everyone, just that I had a reaction to it is all. I just want to make sure I don't offend or anger anyone with this post! :-)
